Internet Oddity – Nirvana plays a Radio Shack in 1988
Here’s some grunge archaeology for you. This video is Nirvana playing at a Radio Shack store in Aberdeen on January 24th, 1988. HOLY MOLY.
This was apparently shot the day after Nirvana recorded their first demo in Seattle with producer Jack Endino. Melvins drummer Dale Crover (who also played on the demo) is behind the kit and all three of the guys look like they’re barely of drinking age, which was indeed the case.
It was filmed as a music video and the music is the recording from the demo sessions. You’ll notice neither Kurt nor Krist are actually plugged into any amps. You sure can hear Dale live, though.
In just over three years, this gang of scalawags would be the biggest band on the face of the Earth.
This is a pretty fascinating little historic anomaly. Enjoy.
